Did You See That?

Written by Jordan Heinzel-Nelson

We are all super excited! Why? Were going on a safari! I can’t wait. It’s a 2 hour drive, and I hate the car but I’m too excited to care.
2:00
When we arrive we go on a boat ride out to the park. On the way we see a gigantic Crocodile, and a bunch of hippos who think they are sneaky because only their pink ears are showing above the water.
3:00
When we arrive on land we are taken to our house where we are staying and get settled, then quickly get into a car for our first animal watch. The car is an army truck. It is huge. Monkeys roam freely. We watch one scamper up a tree. Then we drive into a beautiful lush green open land were there are plenty of birds, Bushbaby, Waterbuck and Impala, all types of antelope. The Impala have black butts. The Waterbuck have a white ring around their butts used for when they scatter at night when danger is around and can see each other easily to get back into their herd. Then we go into a forest with trees called Butterfly trees, in English that is. It’s really another name in some African language that means Butterfly Tree. Then we saw a few hippos on land that are huge. Right after that we see two elephants. The tour guide told us they eat eighteen hours of the day. Amazing! The only thing is, they weren’t as big as I thought they would be but they were still cool. Then we saw some more Warthogs. One snorted as if about to charge the truck then turned, shot its tail in the air and ran off. Then we stopped and had a drink while the sun set. When we left it was dark and so a man sat on the front of the army truck with a flash light. I wanted to see a Hyena but I didn’t. We saw practically no nocturnal animals but some birds.
7:30
When we arrived back at the house we had a dinner buffet. All I know is, it was good. Then we went back to our Chalet to sleep.

February 28 2008
1:00A.M
A snorting, munching sound drifts into Mom and Dad’s room. Hippos! Mom and Dad snuck outside just to see two huge shadows run quickly into the water. Hippos are very shy animals. Meanwhile Terra and I are sleeping soundly.
7:30
Later that morning, when we wake up we go for a quick dip in the pool before breakfast. The pool water is still warm from the burning sun the day before.
8:30
After breakfast we get in the army truck and drive off to see more animals, but it doesn’t look like we’ll see much. Only birds and warthogs.
9:00
Then we go to switch into a boat that takes us along the Shire River. We see so many Hippos. So many they soon get boring. Then we spot an elephant flapping it’s ears to keep cool. We make sure to get a picture. It was the coolest thing I had seen yet. Then we turn around to go back. On the way back we see three HUGE giant lizards crawling around. Then we go back because we have to leave.
1:00
We go to our chalet and pack after a nice swim. We go have lunch, then put our stuff on the boat and go back to are car. On our way back I feel the boat slow down to a stop and there sitting on the bank is a crocodile. It’s mouth is wide open. They say that keeps them cool. It was an awesome sight. Then it quickly runs into the water. Then we see another crocodile behind it. We have to keep going but it was so awesome.

I had so much fun! I know we will experience more animals so I will not worry that I did not see a lion. I can’t wait to show Jem and Clay the amazing wildlife of Africa.

Woah that is so cool! (Terra you told me about it in your e-mail, but the pictures are really neat!) I can't wait to hear more! It sounds like you guys had a total blast! I guess hippos really do eat at all hours (including the ones we sleep during). Hope you're having a good time. Much love, Sydney

Jordan, isn't the Shire River also in the Jungle Book? I can't quite remember, but I will find that book and re-read it. Thanks for sharing your experience, I really enjoyed hearing it from your perspective! I can't wait to have Ava & Stephen read it when they get home from school! :)

It snowed in Texas 2 times this week!!!! That makes your "burning sun" sound even nicer.

Hi Terra! Hi Jordan!
Wow! Thanks for the sharing your animal adventure with us! You saw some very amazing things! I love the details that you provided...Felt like I took the journey with you! Thanks!

We are ROCKin hard on Thursday nights! We had our Open House last night. 12 second graders, 1 fourth, and 1 fifth grader visited! And then the 5th graders returned from the Youth Group Open House...We had over 60 kids sitting down for dinner! And, with the adults...we totaled over 85 for dinner! It was an amazing night!
We look forward to reading more about your adventures and sharing them with ROCK and Sunday School...and we really look forward to when you can personally share your adventures with us!
Hope you're filling up your photo album!!!

Miss you!
Much love,
Mrs. Harshman

Jordan,

Your story is so excellent! I think we have another writer blossoming before our eyes. And I MUST have a copy of that picture of the elephant! Now that you know how much I love elephants, what would you say if I told you that I know a place where you can RIDE one? I'll take you and Terra there next summer if you want. It's in Pennsylvania, and I've been able to ride an elephant several times. It's really cool...when you turn corners the elephant folds his ears over you to protect you. Awesome, huh?

I can't wait to hear more stories from you!

Love,
Miss Lisa

Wow! Wow!! WOW!! JORDAN, What a blog! I felt like I was right there with all of you but I'm glad I wasn't. Those crocodiles would have given me a nervous breakdown! You did a fantastic job in describing the adventure and if you can't find your niche in life, always know you can write wildlife stories - not only from your imagination but from real life adventures. We miss all of you and love you immensely. Keep the blogs coming! Grandma

Great account of a fantastic adventure, Jordan. You could give Bindi Irwin a run for her money!!!
I've always loved monkeys, just ask your dad, so I think being surrounded by them would be like a dream come true.
We pray for all of you every night.

What exciting experiences! But please know that hippos are the most dangerous animals in Africa and are known to kill more people than all others. Typically their victims are natives who go down to the edges of rivers to wash clothes, etc. and are attacked by the nocturnal hippos.
When my late husband and I were on safari, I was awakened the first night by a crunching sound. I got up, grabbed a camera (why, I'll never know! It was pitch black outside!) and quietly snuck outside onto the little patio we had in our lodge in Kenya. About 20 feet away from me was a hyena gnawing on the bones of some poor animal. They (hyenas) are one of the few animals whose jaws are strong enough to chew bones and their spoor is almost pure white as a result.
I continue to be amazed and awed by the adventures you're all experiencing! You're in my prayers daily.

Jordan,

:) I loved the account of your adventure. I can't believe you got TIRED of seeing hippos! C'mon, you've got hundreds of friends back in the U.S. who JUST WISH they could see a hippo (not in a zoo, that is). Think of us!

I would like to know if the Butterfly Tree resembles a butterfly? Or are the leaves butterfly shaped? Could you tell why it has that name?

Also, did you have especially "African" foods on the safari? What would that be? I hope they're feeding you weird grubs and things. ;) You'll have SO many stories to tell!

Oh Jordan!! That adventure sounds amazing. I would love seeing each and every one of those animals. Isn't God amazing putting a white ring on the Waterbuck's bottoms so they can find each other as they run from danger?? You are an excellent writer. I felt as though I was right there next to you.
Love,
Mrs. Daly
PS - Thank goodness hippos are SHY!

Hi Terra and Jordan,
Wow! What an incredible experience! All those animals sound amazing and scary at the same time. You are so blessed to have experienced a new picture of God's amazing beauty. I guess I'll just have to go ride the elephants with you and Lisa in Pennsylvania:)

Dear Jordan,

Sounds like a very special place. Never get tired of seeing those animals. You must realize it doesn't happen every day in Allentown! All we get to see is the occasional deer and fox! Lucky you! And Terra! And you must get that bird list going! What colors are they? How big are their beaks? And what did that butterfly tree look like? Reading your blog is exciting - makes us wish we could be there with you!

Love,
Mr and Mrs Ruch

God Bless all of you.

What a fun few days!! Thanks for sharing with us Jordan, it is very well written. Maybe you could start a business having all those hippos take people across the river instead of going on a boat.

We are following your adventures on the blog, and your cousins really enjoy reading it.

Take care,

Uncle Allen

Hi Jordan! Hi Terra!

What exciting adventures! I'll be sure to show Brendan and Kaylie the great pictures! How did your parents know it was hippos visiting, and not just you guys snoring away in the night? (haha)

Hope you write more about your adventures soon. Terra, I'll be looking for a blog from you next!

Love ya,
jenna

Jordan!
I was reading your story about the safari you went on and it reminded me of a couple of weeks ago when Jem and I spent a couple hours (when we probably should have been studying) watching animal videos on youtube. We learned all about hippos and how how they try to express dominance over by biting each others tails off. It's so cool that you go to see all those animals in real life. Careful if you see a lion though- in one of the videos we saw a lion attacked a man, scary!

Jordan,

Wow, what a wonderful experience. Reading your account of the safari, I felt like I was there with you. You are learning so much more than I would ever have been able to teach you. I'm sharing your entry with the class and I'm sure they will email you. We all miss you a lot, and we talk about you all of the time. We are actually doing power point projects on endangered animals right now, so your safari information comes at the perfect time. Stay healthy and continue to learn and help.

Can you believe all the things you're experiencing? Do you know that you've seen things that I've never seen in my life? And I've been around ALOT longer than you! You write so well, Jordan...I feel as though I'm on safari with you! You have such a love for animals and wildlife. I wonder where this passion will lead you? It'll be fun to find out! Please keep writing! Miss you! LB

WOW, Jordan!!! What an incredible experience you must be having - I wish I was there with you! I hope you don't mind if I share your blog with my class, we're just starting our habitat projects. I will proudly tell them one of former students is actually in Africa experiencing all of the things we will be learning about - how amazing! I wish you well and can't wait to hear more.

Much love,
Ms. Leister

P.S. I'm so impressed with how much you've grown as a writer since second grade!
